"Ginkgo Vitrine" Craig Vandall Stevens, 1997 - (Marquetry Detail)

Materials - Narra with Wenge, Chechen, Satinwood, English Walnut, Cuta, Arrariba, and Cedar of Lebanon

Dimensions - 63" x 26.5" x 12"

This showcase cabinet is made with hand-sawn narra veneers that display a subtle bees-wing figure. The lower cabinet has hand-cut half-blind dovetailed drawers, double mortise and tenon rail joinery, and adjustable shelves. The drawer and door pulls are carved from chechen or 'black poison wood'.

The texture of the German rolled glass in the front and sides of the upper cabinet mimics the bees-wing figure of the surrounding narra veneers. The upper door pull is carved from wenge. Marquetry ginkgo leaves blowing across the back panel, spill onto the lower shelf and into the drawer bottom of the right hand drawer. Shading is done with hot sand. Shelf and drawer ginkgo leaves have a marquetry shadow of English walnut. A wenge waist panel separates the cabinets.
